New Members Announced
 
OVERVIEW: At the recent Annual Meeting of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), held in Boston, Massachusetts, October 6-9, 2016, Miguel A Ramirez, MD was elected to join our organization. Membership in ASES is a privilege and an honor. Only experienced orthopaedic surgeons who have completed a fellowship in shoulder surgery, elbow surgery, and/or sports medicine are considered for membership. Candidates must meet strict academic and clinical requirements to become members of ASES.
 
Dr. Ramirez, in his Second year in practice in Peoria, Il, has ascended quickly in his career being recognized with such a national honor. Membership in American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, which has only 663 members, is by invitation only. Nominees to membership must be sponsored by two active members of the organization. Congratulations to Dr. Miguel Ramirez on becoming a Candidate Member of the society.

Great Plains Orthopedics Partners with OSF healthcare to Become OSF Orthopedics

In order to continue to provide better quality and access to orthopedic care, Great Plains has now partnered with OSF healthcare to become OSF orthopedics. This new collaboration will allow patients better access to their doctors as well, better coordination of care with external providers. Despite this new change, OSF orthopedic surgeons will continue their affiliations with UnityPoint Health Methodist and UnityPoint Health Proctor hospitals.

Research News

Dr. Ramirez recently presented his study entitled “Lacertus Fibrosus vs Achilles Tendon Allograft for Chronic Distal Biceps Tendon Tears: A Biomechanical Study.” At the American Academy of Orthopaedics Surgeons Annual Meeting, March 4, 2016 in Orlando Fl.

Research Interests

Dr. Ramirez has a special interest in the clinical and basic science of orthopaedic surgery that will translate into new orthopaedic technological advancement. A recepient of several research and education fellowships such as the Doris Duke research fellowship, NSF REU research fellows, and the FDA Medical Device Fellowship Program, Dr. Ramirez is involved in several studies aimed at developing new orthopaedic thechnologies. Special areas of interest include:

  • Use of 3-dimensional imaging for medical education, preoperative surgical planning, and virutal surgery
  • Reducing infection in total joint replacement
  • Clinical outcomes total shoulder replacement and rotator cuff surgery.
  • Orthopaedic device development
  • Clincial and basic science of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in shoulder and elbow conditions.
